You can decorate the steamed buns by dipping small Oriental stamps or rubber stamps in red food coloring, then pressing lightly atop cooked buns. Or, try your hand at painting designs on the steamed buns.
INGREDIENTS
1 (13-3/4-ounce) package hot roll mix
4 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon finely shredded orange peel
Dash of ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter, meltedPrepare mix according to package directions through kneading step. Cover. Let rest 5 minutes.
FOR FILLING - Combine sugar, ginger, orange peel, and cinnamon.
Divide dough into 8 pieces. On a lightly floured surface, roll or pat each piece into a 3-1/2-inch circle. Brush with some of the melted butter. Sprinkle 3/4 teaspoon of the filling in the center of each circle. Bring dough up around filling and pinch together well to seal.
Place buns, seam-side down, on a lightly greased rack of a metal or bamboo steamer so sides of buns don't touch. Pour water into a wok until the water is 1 to 1-1/2 inches deep. Bring to boiling. Reduce heat to medium-high. Set steamer in wok. Steam buns, covered, for 15 to 20 minutes or until done.
Remove from steamer. Cool slightly.
