Kentucky Butter Cake

INGREDIENTS 1 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon saltBUTTER SAUCE
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup butter
1 tablespoon rum flavoringPreheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease bottom of a 10-inch tube cake pan.
In a large mixer bowl, cream butter at high speed. Gradually add sugar, continute creaming until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add remaining ingredients (except for Butter Sauce ingredients). Blend at low speed until moistened. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed, scraping bowl occasionally.
Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 60 to 65 minutes, or until top springs back when touched lightly in center.
PREPARE BUTTER SAUCE - In a small saucepan, combine sugar, water and butter. Heat until butter is melted. Do not boil. Add rum flavoring.
Prick top of cake with fork. Pour warm Butter Sauce over warm cake. Cool cake completely before removing from pan. If desired, sprinkle with confectioners' sugar just before serving.
