Gingerbread Skillet Cake

INGREDIENTS

1 (14-ounce) package gingerbread mix
4 squares grated bitter chocolate
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup melted butter
2 cups applesauce
Whipped Cream, for garnish, optional

Prepare gingerbread according to package directions. Let stand at room temperature overnight.

Crumble with fingers. Add chocolate, sugar and butter. Pile 1/2 of the mixture lightly in a heavily greased 12-inch skillet. Place applesauce on top. Add remaining 1/2 of the crumb mixture. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Invert on a plate immediately. (Leave skillet on top until cool.) Remove. Decorate with whipped cream, if desired. (Can be served when cool, but flavor improves when kept for 24 hours under refrigeration.)
