INGREDIENTS

2-1/4 cups self-rising flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup butter-flavored shortening
1 large egg, lightly beaten
2/3 cup milk
1 tablespoon butter, melted

Combine flour and sugar in a medium bowl; stir well. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture is crumbly.

Combine egg and milk; add to flour mixture, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn dough out onto a floured surface, and knead 3 to 4 times.

Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness; cut with a 3-inch biscuit cutter. Place biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden. Remove from oven; brush hot biscuits with melted butter.
