St. Joseph's Bread

Print This Recipe

This makes a lot of bread, but I don't see where there would be a problem with halving the recipe, if you don't want to make such a large amount of bread.

INGREDIENTS

5 pounds flour
2 tablespoons salt
1-3/4 cups sugar
2 tablespoons baking powder
2 tablespoons anise seed

Combine these ingredients in a large bowl and work in 1-1/4 cups Crisco.

IN ANOTHER BOWL COMBINE

4-1/2 cups warm water
3 packages active dry yeast or 3 tablespoons yeast

Dissolve yeast in warm water, add 5 eggs, beaten

Add liquid ingredients to flour and Crisco mixture. Mix well and knead on a floured surface. Place in a greased bowl and allow to rise until double in size.

Cut into 25 pieces and form into shape of cross, bambino, heart, beard, crown, or staff. Allow to rise a second time, brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown. Cool.
