Neil Simon/Cole Slaw

My Mother's Big Hit

It's a known fact that mothers have an anxiety to please.

When I was young, my mother once asked me if I liked chocolate pudding, and I said yes. For the next 15 days she served me chocolate pudding for dessert. Finally I said that I didn't want any more pudding. And my mother said, "But I thought you liked it."

My Mother the Angel (a Conversation with Mrs. Simon)

When Neil decided he no longer wanted to do TV shows, he wrote his first Broadway play, Come Blow Your Horn. He said, "Ma, I'm going to make you an angel." And he put $500 in the play in my name. Needless to say, the play was a success. He reinvested the money in his next play - and the next and next and next, and so on. As far as angels go, I guess I'm a little better off than most.
