Prepare Ahead

INGREDIENTS

1 ounce cake yeast or 1 package dry yeast
1/4 cup scalded cream
1 tablespoon sugar
1 cup butter
2-1/2 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 egg yolks, slightly beaten

Use a 9 x 13-inch pan.

Dissolve yeast in cream. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Combine butter with flour and salt. Mix until crumbly. Add yolks and cream-yeast mixture. Mix thoroughly. Divide dough into 2 parts. Chill until easy to handle. Roll each piece to size of pan. Place 1 piece in bottom of pan and add filling.

FILLING

2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1 egg, separated
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Powdered sugar, optional

Beat cheese, egg yolk and remaining ingredients until light and fluffy. Spread over dough. Place second piece of dough over filling. Brush with slightly beaten egg white. Sprinkle nuts over egg white. Cover and let rise for 2 hours.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. When cool, sprinkle with powdered sugar.
