Mulled Wine

This is a tradition at a German Christmas celebration. It is a nice substitute for eggnog.

INGREDIENTS

4 cups red wine, burgundy or claret
1/2 cup water
Peel of 1 orange
Peel of 1 lemon
1 stick cinnamon
6 cloves
1/4 to 1/2 cup sugar, or to taste

Put all ingredients in a non-reactive saucepan. Simmer gently for 5 to 10 minutes. Strain through a sieve. Serve while hot.

Makes about 10 to 12 servings
