Simply prepared foods are often the most delicious, and this dessert is no exception.

Prepare as directed, but mix in 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg with the sugar, flour and oats.

INGREDIENTS

4 or 5 medium-size tart apples, cored, peeled and thinly sliced
6 tablespoons firmly packed light brown sugar
6 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsifted all-purpose flour
3/4 cup uncooked quick-cooking rolled oats
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
1/2 cup water
1 cup heavy cream, whipped OR 1 pint vanilla ice cream, optional

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Spread the sliced apples over the bottom of a greased 8 x 8 x 2-inch baking dish.

In a mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, and oats, then stir in the melted butter. Spread this mixture over the apples. Pour the water evenly over the top.

Bake, uncovered, until the apples are tender - about 30 minutes.

Serve warm or at room temperature with the whipped cream or ice cream, if desired.
