Apple Fritters

INGREDIENTS 1-1/2 cups flour, divided
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/8 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Dash of nutmeg
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/3 cup whole milk
1 tablespoon melted shortening
2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored, cut into rings, slices, or wedges
Vegetable oil
Powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar, for garnishReserve 1/2 cup flour. Whisk together 1 cup flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Combine egg, milk, and shortening in separate bowl; add to flour mixture. Mix well until no lumps can be seen.
Heat oil in a large heavy skillet. Lightly coat apples with reserved flour, then dip into batter, letting excess drain off, and fry in oil for about 4 minutes, or until light golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
Serve warm, sprinkled with powdered sugar or cinnamon-sugar.
