Depending on what's available, you can substitute pecans or peanuts for the walnuts. All ages will enjoy these cookies.

INGREDIENTS

3 cups all-purpose flour
8 tablespoons sugar
7/8 pound butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 pound walnuts, finely ground
Confectioners' sugar

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Combine the flour and the sugar in a large bowl; mix well. Add the butter, vanilla, and walnuts. (The dough will be crumbly, so use enough additional flour, if needed, to obtain a consistency that you can roll into walnut-size balls).

Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. While the cookies are still warm, shake them in a paper bag filled with confectioners' sugar. Cool and store in an airtight container.
