INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup superfine sugar
1 cup cold water
1 lime, thinly sliced
1 orange, thinly sliced
12 to 16 ice cubes
1 bottle red wine

1-1/2 to 2-quart glass pitcher
4 to 6-ounce glasses, chilled

Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan and place over moderate heat, stirring almost constantly with a wooden spoon until the sugar is dissolved. When the syrup just reaches the boiling point, remove the pan from the heat and add the thinly sliced lime and orange. Allow the fruit to marinate in the syrup for at least 4 hours at room temperature.

Place the contents of an ice-cube tray in the glass pitcher and add 6 slices of the marinated fruit and 1/2 cup of the syrup. Fill the pitcher with the bottle of red wine.

Place 1 slice orange and 1 slice of lime in each glass and fill the glasses from the pitcher.
